Arietta leaned against the counter of the arcade, chewing gum. Big Red to be exact. Not that we needed to know that. Secretly, I know you wanted to know.
Pushing lockes of blonde from in front of her face, she smiled, listening to the beeps coming from different games and Pac-Man noises floating through the air, reaching outside the Arcade's department in the mall.
But something else blended with the noise of arcade games. Queen. Yes. Arietta had brought her CD with her and put her Queen CD into the Arcade's stereo which right now was playing 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
She dusted off her hands on her jean pants. Not that there was anything on her hands. It was an odd habit. Speaking of her pants, they were frayed at the end and also faded, covering some of her shoes she wore. A pair of black and pink etnies that had been written on with lime green sharpie to create a checkered pattern.
Her shirt was nothing special, just a button-up white shirt. Not a work shirt. No, it was fancier. Ruffled at the sleever and slightly hugged her upperbody. Only a tad bit. She smiled, loving this atmosphere, teens and people her own age coming around just to play arcade games; anything from Dance Dance Revolution to Galaga to PacMan.

Cable's eyes were focused on the screen in front of him, his face emotionless. He seemed so serious compared to the boy beside him, who was nearly sweating and looked drastically as if he were about to loose. The DDR game was over in a few moments of the pair pounding their feet on the boards below them, and the loser turned towards Cable, tight-lipped and glaring. "Fine, here's your money, you freak." And with that, he handed over six dollars.
Smiling, Cable turned away, tucking a small neon orange notebook back into his pocket. Scrawled inside was the challenge to the other boy, winner got six dollars - Cable wanted ten, the boy wanted five - and whoever lost also had to do one thing of the other's choosing. Had the other boy won, Cable would've had to scrub toilets for three weeks. Since he won, however, the other boy would have to wear high heels and go around, flirting with guys. The other boy stalked off angrily, leaving Cable standing there alone.

She smiled slightly, watching the two before straightening herself out and beginning to walk over towards him, chuckling.
"Crushing the competition much?" she asked with a wide smile, arms crossed over her chest. She didn't know he didn't like to talk, she hadn't been around long enough to know this. It was amazing, really, watching people compete on Dance Dance Revolution. She liked the game, too. But she rarely played it. She was more of a PacMan girl herself. With that, she blinked, looking him over one time before smiling wide again, "Come here, hon." she nodded her head towards the counter. A.k.A Prize Central where people would come to exchange gifts.
Reaching up slowly, she sighed. He may have thought she was treating him like a little kid or something, but she wasn't and she was just amazed while watching him. And thought maybe he deserved something. Pulling down a green teddybear that wasn't too big, she set it on the counter, "If you want this. You can have it. My treat, really." she nodded her head slowly, "After all that dancing I'm sure you deserve it."

Cable didn't notice Ari until she spoke to him. He beamed when she complimented him, like a kid on Christmas. He followed, as silent as ever, and watched as she pulled the bear down. He listened, absorbing every word, then pulled the notebook back out. He flipped it to an empty page, and pulled out a pencil from one of his pockets. He quickly scrawled something, placed it on the counter, and turned it so she could read it.
"That's alright, you don't have to give me anything. Thanks, though. It's kind of you to offer. I just hope he doesn't find a way to get back at me."

She chuckled, looking at his expression when she complimented him, then rolled her eyes. "Come on. If I say it's from me because I'm a fan, will you take it?" Gee. She sounded odd. But it seemed as if the boy hated talking or was shy. To her, it just seemed a tad 'cute'. "Because I'd love to be able to keep up like that, it's awesome." she walked to the front of the counter, shutting off the stereo and pulling herself up so she could sit on it, holding the bear in her left hand. "I mean. If you don't want to take it, you don't have to. But it'd make me a lot happier."

He scrawled down a bit more handwriting. "I guess I'll take it, since you claim to be a fan. Besides, I don't want to be the cause of depression. That wouldn't be very cool." Cable smiled, leaning against the counter. He brushed some hair out of his eyes and examined his fingers, where the dents gave away his obsession with his violin. he'd never really told anybody about it. Then again, it had been a long time since he had really talked to anybody.
He waited a moment before scrawling down something more. "My name's Cable, what's your name? Does it seem kinda odd that I'm writing instead of talking? I can stop if you want me to, but then I'll seem even more mute."

"Okay. Thanks. Here." she held the bear out, chuckling and swinging her legs to and fro, just being sure not to kick the display glass and not anyone that came around her. "My name's Arietta. Just call me Ari. And it doesn't bother me that you're writing. I think your handwriting's beautiful anyways, hon." she smiled, she was pretty much trying to make him feel comfortable. Maybe then he'd talk if he felt safer?
"It's a lot better than mine. I never wrote well. Always ugly." she chuckled, looking at the bear, then leaning forward to see him a bit better, and noticed the dents on his fingers to which she gasped and grabbed his hand without warning, "What's this from?" she asked, holding his hand and pointing at the indentures, eyes wide. His hand was a blur as he quickly wrote down responses. "Arietta... that's a pretty name. Thanks, I've had a lot of practice. I don't talk much anymore, I had something happen to me that I don't want to talk about." His writing faltered as she grabbed his other hand, and he laughed quietly, almost inaudibly.
"It's alright, I don't injure myself in any way. I play the violin. I learned how to when I was a kid, one of my teachers said I'd get far if I kept practicing. I press too hard on the strings most of the time, and it leaves those dents." He thought it was kind of cute how she seemed so alarmed because the tips of his left fingers were a bit deformed looking. She was probably the first person he'd met since he ran away who'd ever really said anything about it.

"Thanks. I don't really like it too much, though. Ari's more my style." she said, watching him write, head tilted to the side as she read what he had written, "Cable's an interesting name too, hon." she said, blinking and staring at his hands. "Don't worry about it. I won't ask you about something you don't like to talk about." she said, looking around, then back at him.
"I heard the violin's REALLY hard to play. In fact, maybe one of these days I'll be able to hear you play it? It seems like you're dedicated to playing music or something." she took a deep breath, "You seem like such a sweet guy. And peaceful." she bit her bottom lip, staring at the Dance Dance Revolution platform, then at the illuminated screen of the game.

"My parents were interesting people, what can I say?" He flipped to the next page as his handwriting filled up the last line, and once again he took on that serious look. "Thanks, most girls I've ever talked to have been so determined to find out about my personal life it scares me. Like they're fan girls or something. I'm not famous yet." He held back saying anything about becoming famous for the murder that caused him to run away.
He nodded slightly when she talked about him playing violin. He scribbled down, "Sure. I'd have to tune it first, otherwise it sounds like a dying cat." as Ari said something about him being sweet and peaceful. "I used to be a bit more of a jerk. I did some things I wasn't too proud of and changed myself. Well... only after I ran."

"My parents. Were. Parents." she couldn't think of a way to explain them, they were like parents that were. Normal. Made sure her grades were up and she didn't get into trouble. Even though she did. "Oh. Don't worry. I'm curious about you. But not like. In an obsessive way, hon." she put a hand on his arm as if to reassure him.
"Okay. Okay. But when it's tuned I MUST hear you play." she held out a finger demandingly, but as a joke, smile wide before she hit him softly in the arm, "I could never see you as a jerk. Really. It just doesn't seem like you." she said.

Cable laughed slightly, though it was smothered by the grin he plastered on his face. "Glad to hear it. I don't think I'd want to get chased out of this town by a girl on a rampage. I've heard the term 'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned' way too many times to forget about it." He continued to grin, hoping she'd realize he was joking.
Maybe she'd get him to talk. She was definitely nice enough, especially after how comfortable he seemed, writing down what any other person would say. He rubbed the spot where she hit him, laughing. "Not too hard!" He picked at one of his fingernails, debating what to write next. "It's hard to explain... my jerk-ish-ness, I mean."

She chuckled, reading and looking up at him, "Trust me. That's VERY true. But I'm not too violent.. Usually." she grinned up at him and winked to emphasize she was also making a joke.
"Alright, I'm sorry. I admit, I hit you too hard." she said, raising both hands as if to say she were sorry, "I won't hit you so hard again, next time." she sighed, beginning to swing her legs again, looking at him quietly, then breaking the silence by speaking; something she did a lot. "I just couldn't see you being a jerk. I mean. It's possible. Everyone has that streak in them. But you're just so quiet. I couldn't see you pushing anyone around or telling people to get away." she was just guessing this was what he meant by being a 'jerk'.

"Thanks, Ari." was all he could think to scribble down. However, Cable smiled, his eyes absorbing everything he could about the arcade. He picked up the bear after a moment, examining it. It looked like the usual thing you could get at an arcade, and he squished the longer strings on the top of its head down.
"You can name it, since you gave it to me." Cable wrote after a moment, after he set it down on the counter, and he glanced one more time at the crowd that was entertaining themselves. No sign of the guy he had crushed earlier, which was probably a good thing.

She smiled, watching him, then taking the writing utensil from him without asking and pressing the tip against the paper to write the following, simple word that people usually wrote. Even after starting a conversation; 'Hi' of course she remembered to put a heart instead of a dot about the i.
"A name, huh?" she chuckled, rubbing her chin in thought and staring off into oblivion. There! A name! Oblivion. Haha. Just something pulled right from the air. "Oblivion." She said it so simply as if it were a common name when it wasn't. But that was how she felt right now. She was happy. But being serious at the same time as being playful. If it were possible. "Is that a good name?" she asked him, chuckling.
